Weekly Newsletter May 20

May 20, 2024

Dear Indian Hills Middle School Community:

We have arrived at last to the final two weeks of the school year! This week will be an eventful one with Chromebook returns beginning on Monday, assemblies being held on Wednesday and Thursday, and our Memory Book day wrapping up the festivities on Friday. While activities will abound, we encourage students to continue to make positive choices at school so that they may enjoy these year-end activities. We look forward to this week’s festivities and to the final three days of school following Memorial Day!

Memory Books will be passed out this Friday, May 24th during 2nd period. If your student did not previously purchase a book through Skyward, they can buy a Memory Book during their lunch period that day for $30. CASH Only. Our PTSA is in charge of this event and we thank them for all their hard work putting together our memory books!

✔ Lagoon Day for 8th Graders is on Tuesday, May 28th. More information about purchasing Lagoon tickets ($54), submitting permission forms, and signing up for a bus is provided at the end of this newsletter.

✔ May Library Updates & Chromebooks: on Monday, May 20th, 8th grade students will be turning in their Chromebooks and charging cords during their science classes. On Tuesday, May 21st, 6th & 7th grade students will be turning in their Chromebooks.

Please be sure that your student brings their charging cord on the day their Chromebook will be checked in. It would also help us if you could check their Chromebooks and make sure there are no extra stickers on the Chromebook. They should only have stickers for an asset tag and their name. Students will bring home a receipt once their Chromebook has been returned. If there is a fine associated with their Chromebook return, it will be noted on the receipt and will appear in Skyward in June.

Yay, Us: A huge thank you to all of you for supporting reading this year! Our school continues to lead the district (by A LOT) in books checked out on Sora, our digital reading platform. Check out our book checkouts this year:

• Ebooks: 111,044

• Audiobooks: 26,444

• Magazines: 3,359

• Physical books: 9,322

• TOTAL: 150,366!

✔ Summer Reading: The library will be sponsoring a Sora Summer Reading Competition. The student who reads (or listens to audiobooks) for the most minutes this summer will receive a $50 Amazon “Back to School” shopping spree in the fall. Sora is an app that can be added to iPads, iPhones, or can be used online with any computer at home. Students simply need to login with their Canyons District username and password. It’s that easy to have access to amazing summer reads. Happy reading!

✔ Digital Literacy for Summer: “Summer usually equals a little extra downtime, travels, and an opportunity to indulge. But in the age of the Internet, it’s easy to confuse the definition of indulgence with binge watching TV Netflix series, scrolling endlessly on social media, or browsing the hundreds of product pages of your favorite online stores.

“A better definition of holiday indulgence? Time spent away from screens to give your eyes and brain a break, reconnecting with yourself or loved ones, being present, and appreciating every moment.

“A summer digital detox can prime you to achieve all of the above—and engrain some powerful habits that will help you better control your screen time long after the summer ends.” (From “Start a Digital Detox this Summer” by Natalie Theodosi)
