Prize drawing for participants. Trying to give student club more responsibility this year. Collecting Reflections entries now. Theme is culture. Collecting volunteers for History Day event. It “feels like pulling teeth to get volunteers” this year. Advertising in the IHMS newsletter. Volunteers need to complete the district’s Volunteer Application. Planning to amend the PTSA budget in the upcoming meeting. Reported $55,000 in the bank. $8k available for teacher grants this year. Left treat in faculty room boxes today.

- Upcoming: Individual High School Planning meetings with 8th grade students.
- Safe Walking Routes Discussion (Joseph Olson)
- Mr. Olson: Printed copies of Safe Walking Routes was distributed to members. Working to make improvements to improve safety and traffic flow. Ongoing struggle. SRO Slaugh will increase presence during pickup/dropoff. Staff members and admin are consistently present outside. Open to feedback and ideas to improve safety and flow.
- Ms. Karren: Safety Plan is due to district every year in October. Includes concerns from the SCC and the district’s response to those concerns. Concrete barrier was a new addition last year. This year is showing improvement in dropoff timing. Autumn Hill and Cherry Hill crosswalks were discussed. District has been asked for increased support. We’ve asked for flashing crosswalk signs. State law = No reduced speedzones or crossing guards for above K5 settings.
- Seltz: Looked up RFB = Rapid Flashing Beacon.
- Watne: 10th E is “a mess” from flashing lights at crosswalks. Negatively affects traffic flow.
- Latimer: Reducing two crosswalks to one will not be helpful for traffic flow.
- Draper: Student reported almost getting hit by a car while crossing the street to Cherry Hill. Looked both ways, car was flying downhill and wasn’t looking, a nearby student yelled for the student to watch out for the car. Contacted Tyler Scheels at Sandy City. Suggested inviting Scheels to observe pickup/dropoff for firsthand witnessing.
- Olson: Loved that idea. Willing to partner with Draper on coordinating the observation.
- Draper: Proposed financial solutions such as partnering with PTSA, school, and Sandy City.
- Karren/Harman: Liked that idea.
- ACTION ITEM: Draper/Olson will arrange visit from Tyler Scheels to observe pickup/dropoff.
- Olson: Crossing 13th E. is also an area of concern. Safety plan/map is not currently showing significant changes from the previous year. Current construction on 13th is not within our IHMS zone. Snowbanks/snow removal can cause obstructions at times but not a concern last year due to lack of snow.
- Draper: Thinks it’s odd that 13th E is not considered a hazard route for middle school as it is a hazard route at the elementary level and those students are bussed.
- Olson: There have been safety issues occasionally on 13th E.
- Draper: Could propose a review of the route to possibly re-label it as a hazard route.
- Karren: Need to make a motion to approve the Safe Routes Plan.
- Watne: 13th E is 2nd priority to me, 1st priority is Autumn/Cherry Hill crosswalks. General agreement from committee.
- Watne 1st motion to approve, Shaw 2nd motion, all approved.
- Digital Citizenship discussion (Shelly Karren, Katie Gebhardt)
- Karren: Safety and Digital Citizenship presentation from the district. This plan is not due until December. Tools mentioned: ContentKeeper, LanSchool, and tcp.canyonsdistrict.org to select student’s filter level, search history, and time usage.
- Draper: ContentKeeper only filters searches. Shared files or uploaded content are not flagged by CK. LanSchool can be helpful to catch inappropriate content in classrooms. Feels that “Bark” is a better tool and is used in other districts. District was openly discussing “Bark” within the last 1-2 years with no known movement.
- Karren: Google Docs and chats continue to be used by students to share filtered content. YouTube has been blocked but the students find work-arounds. Any recommendations or feedback?
- Shaw: Power-washing a chromebook will get rid of any games, videos, etc.
- Karren: Continued district presentation. Common technology questions and digital citizenship lessons can be found at canyonsdistrict.org/familyconnections, ParentSquare updates, and Canyoneering night events. Still working on the legislation regarding chromebooks for 6th grade students in middle school. ThriveTime lessons on Fridays in October. Digital Citizenship Week in January. Trina McGowan (Media Center) heads Digital Citizenship content and events. Acceptable use of technology is taught/retaught to students each term. ThriveTime lessons are available at canyonsdistrict.org/thrivetime.
- SCC agreed that they received enough information and the plan is viable. No further questions. Official voting will take place next month.
- MAP data review for fall (Shelly Karren)
- Schoolwide goals are based on MAP data. 64% of our students are approaching their growth goal based on Fall scores (under school goal by 1%; 7th and 8th grade only.) 59% are approaching growth goal in math (under school goal by 8%.) Focusing on growth rather than achievement. Achievement is above national average. Questions?
- Next Meeting: Tuesday, November 10th
- Motion to adjourn at 5:14pm.
