Red Ribbon Week

Dear Parent,

Did you know that 13 is the average age when alcohol and drugs are used for the first time?
Armed with the right information and concrete strategies, we can support our kids in making
good choices.

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated from October 25-29, school and youth support organizations
across the country use this time to engage youth in dialogues about the importance of making
positive life choices and avoiding the temptation to use drugs and alcohol.

Family bonding is a protective factor against delinquency for children of all age groups. It is a
significant source of protection against drug and alcohol abuse in adolescents. Positive
attachment to parents is a strong protection and factor in keeping your child drug free.

Indian Hills Middle School will be participating in activities during Red Ribbon week that highlight
the importance of staying drug free. Click here for this week’s in-school activities. Many of these activities have home based options for
parents to get involved. Monday- we are encouraging a Family Activity night (this can be done
any night). We are sending home popcorn with a note about this on Monday. If you take a
photo of your family activity (send in by November 1st), your student can earn prizes and
PBIS points. A slideshow of the photos will be displayed on the screen in the commons.
Photos are sent to IHMSphotos@gmail.com.

We are also encouraging family meals together. Parents Empowered has a link to some fun
family activities that can be done at dinnertime. https://parentsempowered.org/how/have-fun/
Here link to Family Conversation Starters that can be used for dinner time conversation.

We encourage you to talk with your children this week, to spend time with them and to ask those
important questions to help them be drug free. Family bonding is a very effective tool in staying
Drug Free. Thank you for your support!
