Dear Indian Hills Middle School Community:

We welcome our students and staff back from what we hope was a restful break. With the snow on the

trees and the mountains, it feels like the next holiday is just around the corner. During a season when

many of us look for opportunities to lift those around us with kindness, we remind everyone in our

school community to continue to treat each other a little more kindly during this holiday season. I often

point students to a sign in my office that reads, “Be kind and kindness will find you back.” And it’s true;

the more kindness we can give, the more it finds us in return.

✔ A Reminder to Charge your Chromebooks: We have noticed that more of our students are coming to

school without charging their Chromebooks. Being prepared is an expectation we have for all of our

students, and there are only a limited number of extra Chromebooks available for use in the classroom if

students are not prepared. We encourage all students to give some extra focus to this task in the

coming weeks.

✔ Library Announcements: We are so proud of our Indian Hills students for their excellent reading

during the first quarter. Miss McGowan, our teacher-librarian, is pleased to announce that Indian Hills

leads the district in minutes read on our digital platform, Sora. Together, our students have checked out

3,263 books on Sora and 1,305 physical books from the library. Winners in each grade were given prizes

this week. Thank you, parents and guardians, for supporting their reading habits. Twenty minutes each

night makes a huge difference in the learning of students! (See attached infographic.). Keep up the great

reading!

✔ Library Digital Citizenship: Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has had a surge of interest with the

introduction of Chat GPT and the ability for AI to generate content for people. This technology has

exciting possibilities; however, there are potential complications as we learn to use AI. Helping students

to be responsible with AI use will become more important to raising our children as responsible digital

citizens. Canyons School District has developed an AI guide to help understand this new technology and

what families (and others) can do to help students use it responsibly. Visit Canyons Family Connections

website to access the AI guide. and other technology resources for families.

✔ Free Mental Health Consultations: Canyons School District is sponsoring free mental health

consultations for students, ages 10-18, and their parents. Families are welcome to register for any date

and location that fits their schedule. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation of your scheduled

appointment. At the event, parents will sign a consent and complete a questionnaire, and students will

be asked to complete a screening tool. During the consultations, licensed counselors will discuss

available resources to meet your child’s needs. Register here: https://calendly.com/csd-mental-healthscreening.

✔ Warrior Support: We are back to our regularly scheduled Warrior Support hours this week. Warrior

Support runs Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. We encourage students who need

extra help to attend Warrior Support as there are always two teachers (one of whom is a math teacher)

who are always available to assist.

Warrior Support

What it looks like for Students:

● Students MUST arrive between

3:00-3:15 in order to participate in

Warrior Support.

● Students sit at the front of the

library at the tables.

● Students scan a QR code that takes

them to a Google Form they fill out.

● Students ask the teachers questions

and work on homework quietly.

● If teachers are not immediately

available, students work on what

they can while waiting patiently for

help.

● Only students who need help stay

for Warrior Support. Students who

do not need the support will head

home after 3:30.

● Students who are not following

expectations for library behavior

will be invited to return another day

for help.

● Students should submit the Google

Form at the END of the time they

spend in the library to report what

they accomplished with the time.

● Students must exit the library

through the doors to the outside,

not back into the building.

Purpose: To give students extra support from a teacher to help with

homework or concepts not understood during class time.

What it looks like for Teachers:

● Teachers come to the library

immediately after 7th period.

● Teachers help students with the QR

code to sign into the Google Form.

● Teachers circulate among students,

offering help.

● Teachers invite students who are

not following expectations to leave

and try again another day.

● Teachers ensure that every students

who is in the library after 3:30 is

here for Warrior Support.

● Library doors will be locked at 3:30

when Miss McGowan leaves. After

this, teachers ensure that students

in the library are here for Warrior

Support only.

● Teachers have students submit the

form to report what they

accomplished during the Warrior

Support time. Then students exit

through the outside door (not into

the hallways), tidy up the library,

and turn off the lights before

leaving.
