Indian Hills Middle School Community Council Meeting

October 1st , 2024, Warrior Room 

Attending: Rebecca Van De Graaf, Mindy Cupello, Trina McGowan, Rochelle Griffin, Shelly Karren, Joseph Olson, Patrick Latimer, Anne Lavigne, Amy Shaw, Karlie Aardema, Cinnamin Morton

Agenda:

  • Welcome to new SCC members & approve September meeting minutes
    • Mindy motioned; Amy seconded
  • Elect a vice-chair and secretary (Griffin)
    • Rochelle nominated Karlie as secretary.  Amy seconded.  All approved.
    • Amy nominated Mindy as vice-chair. Rochelle seconded.  All approved.
  • Counseling Update (Van De Graaff)
    • A lot of classroom lessons on dealing with stress and healthy coping.
    • 7th grade check ins are happening right now
    • Academic check ins are also happening with students who have 1 or more D and helping them develop executive functioning skills
    • Preparing for college week in 2 weeks.  
  • PTSA Update (Lavigne)
    • Have not had October meeting yet.  
    • Red Ribbon week and reflections are due this month.
    • Fed the teachers for parent/teacher conferences
    • Meet the candidate night is being hosted here this Thursday
    • PTSA focuses on advocacy and making sure that schools have what they need for students to thrive.
      • Bill to increase land trust to 5% – PTSA is for
      • Want to change income tax to not all go to schools and PTSA is against that
  • Digital Citizenship info (McGowan)
    • Ms. McGowan shared the district digital citizenship presentation from the district
    • Rochelle asked about the “TCP” website and if it is new.  The district pushed out information about this new program last year to parents. Parents would like more information sent out about the filtering options.
    • Digital citizenship week conflicts with college week this week so we will do White Ribbon week in January instead.  The theme will be “Be a Digital Detective.” 
    • Our new cell phone policy ties into this and it has made a positive impact on our community.
  • School Assessment Data: MAP testing & RISE 2024 (Ms. Karren)
    • Ms. Karren went over our school goals as well as our end of year data. 
      • We had great ELA scores.  We are going to format our writing testing for 8th grade like we did last year (stop, drop, test).
      • We met our math goal, so we raised the number of students we want to see earn proficiency.
      • Science is very close to our goal.
    • Ms. Karren shared the new MAP data that we have for our students
  • Looking ahead: School Safety Updates for November (Ms. Karren)
    • Mr. Olson went over our safe routes plan.
    • Concern was brought up about two crosswalks right off of school property. 
  • Rochelle moved to adjourn, Amy seconded.
